So I thought I'd give a small update on my summer out here in Wyoming (Yes, Will, Wyoming!). We've been doing alot of hiking in our field work and I'm starting to get better at it. We just did a very difficult hike today up Glory Mountain (http://www.summitpost.org/mountain/rock/267521/mount-glory.html). The gradient was probably 45 degrees the entire way up. The top of it is over 10,000 ft and the feet that we rose from our start was about 2000. The view was amazing, we could see great expanses of the Tetons and some other ranges.

I was also wondering if someone could post on livejournal to give me a heads up when Dan leaves, I don't think he'll let me know.

I hope all of you are doing well. Enjoy your summers!

March 13th 7:30: Bob Seger, me waving a lighter in Joe Louis.

Hey Will, I posted on the Yahoo league but I'll ask here too, can we move the draft back half an hour? My class ends right at 1:00 on Friday so I would be late to the draft. Thanks.

Well Will, you shouldn't feel alone when you come back to the state. I went to the doctor today and I have to give up alchohol because I have a condition known as gout. Gout occurs when there is a build-up of uric acid and it is aggrivated by alchohol. I guess that's life.

People are frickin' idiots. Why the hell would you think that a light bright is a bomb? Oh my god! It has lights and its giving me the finger! It must be the work of terrorists who hate my freedom! People need to stop being afraid of anything that does not have a brand name attached to it.

Ok, I just feel the need to post because I am getting really pissed off at the Detroit auto makers. I've been listening to the NPR coverage of the oral arguments around Massachusetts vs. the EPA . And when they talk to the automotive alliance representatives they sound like the most steriotypical big buisness uncaring idoits that they've always sounded like. They are not even contesting the that they are contributing to climate change they are just saying that their emmissions shouldn't be regulated because the EPA can't deal with a world wide problem.

It occurs to me that if the auto companies had stop fighting tooth and nail to avoid any environmental improvement whatsoever and moved green in the early nineties then they probably wouldn't be half a step from oblivion. They might actually be able to .. gasp.. compete with Toyota and Honda. Why the hell do American Auto companies have to be run by a bunch of morons? The only reason that I would want to by their product anymore is the fact that a portion of it is built in America and even that is shrinking daily.

Sigh... I guess I feel a little bit better after that rant.

I'm sitting here listening to the BBC Newshour and I hear that Pierre Gemayel was just assassinated. He is a Maronite Lebanese minister. No doubt this was carried out by the Hezbullah alliance. If two more of the ministers die/are assassinated then the government will be forced to dissolve (due to the resignation of hezbullah allied ministers). I think that this strategy is likely to backfire on Hezbullah. Part of their coalition involves some fringe Christians hoping to retain power through shifting demographics. This action may alienate some of their allies. Gemayel was a very young individual and did not have any "blood on his hands" from the civil war although his family members had done some bad things. Hopefully this will unite the country against hezbullah and Syrian influence.

Just an update on what I'm up to out here in Wyoming.

Last tuesday I went whitewater rafting in the snake river. It was a blast. I've never made friends as fast as I'm making them out here. I think it is due to the close quaters that we are in. We go out in the field again for five days and four nights on Tuesday and that promises to be a smelly experience but I am sure it will also be very beautiful and interesting. We will be in Wyoming, Utah, and Idaho.

I've also started learning how to swing and just tonight I've learned the very most basic movements in salsa. I'm looking forward to actually becoming skillful this fall. Tonight I just got back from one of the most entertaining games of chirades/style party game.

That's about all I've been up to lately. I hope that you have all been doing well.

Oh,and PS, I've been catching some great fish out here.

For the past week of been clinging to the computer digesting all the news that I can get about what has been happening in Lebanon and it really troubles me. I cannot see anything of benfit happening, I see no silver lining to this cloud. I think that Hezbullah is actually the one faction that is taking benefit from the entire crisis currently unfolding.

Of course, that is probably why they captured the Israeli soldiers in the first place. If Israel negotiated they could get a release of some prisoners. If they did not negotiate and started the sort of campaign that they are on now it strengthes Hezbullah domestically.

In the Lebanese civil war Beruit was a jungle. Christians againsy shhiites, shiites against sunnis, drus against christians, etc. There was no true alliance between any of the factions that lasted beyond a week. Israel entered that atmosphere and survived even if it was painful. But this time it is different I think. The Cedar government has been trying to reduce the influence of Syria, to create a more national Lebanon. But the government is not powerful enough to take on Hezbullah, the only faction that was not required to disarm after the peace. And of course, with Syria gone there has been a power vacum and Hezbullah has benefited (Hezbulllah for the uninitiated is an Iranian backed group).

The difference here is that there are no Lebanese factions that are going to go after Hezbullah in retribution for the outbreak of hostilities. The atmosphere in Lebanon has changed. Instead I see reports of Christians, after their neighborhoods have been bombed, voicing support for Hezbullah. Why? Simply because Hezbullah is on their side now. They are not afraid of Lebanese factions shooting up their houses. They are only afraid of Israeli Jets. And if Hezbullah is fighting against the people who are killing their families then they will support Hezbullah even if they do not support its goals or its policies.

Israel may be trying to destroy Hezbullah but they have actually only strengthened its hand in Lebanon. Every day that a bomb drops in Beruit is a day that Hezbullah gains support domestically.

I don't want to see Lebanon in the hands of Muslim extreemist groups but if this military action goes on any longer I'm not sure if it can be stopped.

Hey, I'm just writing to let you know what I've been up to for the
past couple of days. Sunday was our freeday and some people went
camping or hiking or rafting. I decided that I was going to go
flyfishing. One of my classmates, her name is Ada, wanted to learn how
to fish so she came along also. We were trying to find our way to the
Camp Davis property on the other side of ther river and were following
verbal directions but we made a wrong turn and winded up on the
property of an individual nicknamed "Grumpy Pete". Don't worry, he
wasn't as grumpy as they made him out to be. We explained what we were
trying to do and apologized for walking onto his property and he
directed us to the correct way to walk.

When we finally got where we were going we fished for a while, looked
at some rocks, at lunch, and fished some more. Ada ended up pulling in
two Cutthroats (trout). We were using one pole so I didn't end up
fishing a ton.

Last night I watched a movie called "A River Runs Through it". A film
about two brothers and flyfishing. Afterwards I went and watched the
talent show which was wonderful. Hillarious and just plain good. I
love it out here and I think that I'm going to come again next year.

We started our field work this week and I've already become fairly
proficient in identifying various types of rocks - not to be confused
with minerals although I'm pretty good at those now too. Rocks contain
minerals in certain proportions. A granite for example should have quartz, mica,
feldpar and a few other trace minerals.

I got some pictures of our first big field trip which was today. We
worked in a glacial valley characterized by a stream called "Granite
Creek" It was absolutely beautiful.

I just got back from fishing again. Although this time I went with a
bunch of people whi were on their way to a swimming hole I fishhed
just down from them. Unfortunately, I did not get anything and even
more unfortunately my Cowboy hat that Dad got me blew off into the
water and downstream before I could grab it. I'm going to need to get
a new one as soon as possible so that I have field hat.

That is about all I can think to relate about my past few days so I'll
talk to you later.

Wyoming is a wonderful place to spend the summer. Camp Davis has been thoroughly engaging so far. We have alot of work in the classroom the first week. From 8am to 2 or 4pm we have geology class but next week we start going in the field and visiting some of America's most amazing natural beauties. I find myself enjoying the material which we are learning. It reminds me of Lapidary class that some people had with the old science teacher Beth back at Valley. I loved doing lapidary and this seems to be just as interesting.

We are stationed about a mile up in the Rockys and our accomidations look like sheet metal shacks, two bunks for each cabin (that means four people). I am still getting used to the thinner air, I run out of breath fairly quickly when playing the daily games of wiffle ball. I hope all of you are doing great and are having an enjoyable July. See you all later.

Well, tomorrow morning at 7am I'll be starting my trek to Wyoming for my geology class. We're taking univesity vans and camping for the two and a half days it takes to get there. I'm looking forward to spending some time out west again. I love it out there. My Dad's sporting clay shoot was last friday and was a blast. Will, I know you will apreciate this, George Perles showed up, not to shoot but just to say hi to my dad. The past couple of years they've spent some time together during the Motor City Bowl and apparantly they get along nicely. I think he is running for a University board thi year too.

Here are a few things I'm looking forward to doing this next month out west.
-Flyfishing
-Exploring
-Softball
-The stars
-UFO hunting

Will, I have a question for you at the end of this post... if you could help me out I'd appreciate it.

The past month has been a really tough month for almost all of the activitiies I tend to pay attention to. The Pistons were eliminated in the Eastern Conference finals... that was a let down. The other day I watched my first Tiger's game in a while. When I was younger I always had a tough time watching baseball, even though I enjoyed playing it. However, I had a very enjoyable experience watching the Tiger's game with Darrel, drinking a beer. Those two things seem to go together perfectly. Since then I've been watching whenever I can. And now all of the sudden the Tiger's are having difficulties.

Then of course there is the worst news for the past five weeks. The stock market has puked. It is in total hangover mode and looks like it might have a few more tough weeks to go. It is really tough to see all your gains earased and your portfolio smacked around. The silver lining is that I have a lot of money in cash and now is a good time to buy (because it is a bad time to own). Prices are going down and many stocks I like are going on clearance. I think I'm going to wait a bit longer before I make my purchases. The prices aren't quite where I want them right now.

Covering my current holdings... Dynegy (DYN) done well and will continue to do well. But Headwaters (HW) has been decimated. This is because it has a synthetic fuels buisness that recieves a tax credit of 5 dollars for every barrel of oil equivilent it produces. This credit is due to expire in 07 and congress has not shown any certainty in whether or not it will be extended. The uncertainty has caused a selloff and that has pushed the price to its 52-week low... sigh. I keep reminding myself that I invested in this for the long term, the pain is only temperary.

A few stocks I'm watching... Danaher (DHR) a industrial tools company, they make the gas tanks and pumps for gas stations. New pumps and tanks will need to be installed in order to use ethanol. It also has a strong record of growth this is a pretty secure company. Citigroup (C) is a well known bank that has great growth in the US and is soon to have major expansion to India to take advantage of their growing middle class that doesn't know what to do with their new found wealth. Tractor Supply Company (TSCO) is one of my favorite stores. It is serves the needs of hobby farmers and other individuals who enjoy the rural lifestyle. I love the people who work here, I always enjoy going in there and they make me want to come back. This company has seen great growth and has an expansion plan to keep it going. I'm looking to get into this one under 50. The last two I'm looking at are Union Pacific (UNP) and Norfolk Southern (NSC). I like the management at NSC a bit more but I prefer the routes that Union Pacific runs better. Will, which of these companies do you think will preform better? The Union Pacific benefits from asian trade and could be an ethanol play in that trains will likely be the major distributer of ethanol do to the fact that ethanol cannot be transported via pipeline. Or does the manegment of Norfolk Southern make it more likely to preform?
